In { withinPlaces } Kirsten Johannsen looks into concepts of home and distinguishes private from public spaces. Photographs of housings and their furnishings are presented. The large-format, blurred photographs open up manifold associations about the places and their ambient moods, the residents and their identities. Johannsen combines these photographs with a text by Xavier de Maistre. The French writer invented the travel form of room voyages in the eighteenth century. The unconventional kind of journey concentrates on the immediate surroundings. It is not the distance that is the goal, but the exploration of one’s own microcosm.
